Horticulturist

Seeking an experienced Horticulturist for a large Estate property located in the suburbs of Boston

Overview:

The Horticulturist will bring technical skills and expertise to support the Estate gardens. This will include

identifying a strategy for appropriate plant identification and cultivation and guiding best stewardship practices for growth and garden maintenance

Working closely the the property owner and an established team of horticulturists and designers, the horticulturist will demonstrate exceptional standards, creativity, and professional gardening talent and assist with living collections management. Knowledge of New England flora, soil, an climate zones required.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Demonstrate expertise in the comprehensive growth and care of trees, shrubs, perennials, annual flowers, and tropical potted plants
• Perform all duties associated with plant aquisition, installation, propagation, care and maintenance including shrubs, tres, and flowers
• Guide the implementation of best practices to manage garden design and exceptional horticultural best practices, balancing natureal aesthetics and historical integrity.
• Identify and create an IPM (integrative pest management) system for the estate with organic practices always a priority
• Assist with landscape design, restoration, and maintenance. Understanding of greenhouse and hoop house operations.
• Care and oversight of extensive rare and tropical plant collections.
• Provide guidance on plant science-health, planting, harvesting, plant yields, and appropriate plant selection in accordance with the unique environments.
• Test and research different cultivation techniques
• Recommend best practices through strong written and verbal communication working with Estate Manager and grounds team
• Maintain financial records
• Assist Estate manager with project estimates that are garden spcific
• Collaboration with Estate Gardener and grounds team

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Horticulture
• Minimum of 5 years of hands on experience
• physically able to lift 50 lbs and work in all weather conditions
• Must have current drivers license
• Must be legally authorized to work in the US
