Full-Time Governess & Family Assistant

Location: Charleston, SC, Live Out (Travel Required)
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Compensation: Competitive Salary with benefits DOE
Reports To: Principal 

Position Overview:

An experienced and nurturing Governess & Family Assistant is sought by a family of three to oversee their two year old daughter’s early education and support the smooth functioning of their household. The ideal candidate is an experienced educator grounded in Montessori, Waldorf, or Reggio Emilia philosophies, equally comfortable creating enriched learning environments and handling family assistant tasks with discretion and professionalism.

This hybrid role is 50% education-focused and 50% family support, perfect for someone organized, proactive, and passionate about child development and supporting a busy household. Parents are hands-on, involved in homeschooling, and seek a collaborative professional to grow with their family long-term. 

The family is based in Charleston, SC but also travels to homes in California, and an estate on a biodynamic farm in SC; other homes may be added in the future. Candidates must be willing to travel with the family and be somewhat flexible with their schedule. 

Governess Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate on curriculum development, lesson planning, and learning goal
  • Lead daily educational activities emphasizing nature, creativity, and imaginative play
  • Focus on language development, early literacy, numeracy, music, arts, and sensory play
  • Promote intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual development through enriching experiences
  • Guide behavior through calm, positive reinforcement, instilling manners, independence, and kindness
  • Coordinate and manage the child’s schedule, activities, and outdoor adventures
  • Maintain safe, beautiful, and organized play and learning spaces

Family Assistant Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day household tasks and ensure smooth family operations

  • Run errands, manage household inventories, organize, and handle light housekeeping

  • Oversee pet care when needed

  • Assist with event planning, scheduling, travel arrangements, and trip preparation

  • Liaise with vendors, oversee vehicle maintenance, and track home projects

  • Perform research, manage bill payments, phone calls, and email correspondence

  • Maintain confidentiality, handle sensitive information, and protect family privacy

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree minimum (Education or Child Development strongly preferred)
5+ years of experience as a Governess, Montessori/Waldorf teacher, or early childhood educator
Professional family assistant or executive assistant experience highly valued
Deep knowledge of child development principles and alternative education methods
Warm, calm, patient, highly organized, and discreet demeanor
Strong problem-solving skills with a no-task-too-small attitude
CPR/First Aid Certified (or willing to obtain)
Valid Driver’s License, clean driving record, reliable vehicle
Valid U.S. Passport and willingness to travel
Able to pass a background check and sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA)
Tech-savvy and comfortable with modern communication platforms
